Chemical energy can be found in a variety of sources, including fuels such as gasoline, natural gas, and coal, as well as in food and batteries. Examples of Chemical Energy
Plants require solar energy to convert carbon dioxide into sugar and then water. Chemical bonds that hold the chemicals together keep sugar, water, and carbon dioxide together.
For instance, oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen atoms are the building blocks of all sugars and are held together by chemical bonds. These atoms don’t automatically bond together; rather, energy is needed to keep them together.
The hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen atoms are combined to form sugar in plants using solar energy. This is an appropriate example of energy conversion where energy is transferred from one form to the other. Here, solar energy is converted into chemical energy to keep the system from disintegrating.
Chemical energy can be seen in the burning of wood. Wood is composed of complex molecules such as cellulose and lignin, which contain a significant amount of stored chemical energy. When wood is burned, the heat from the fire breaks down the chemical bonds in these molecules, releasing the stored energy in the form of heat and light.
Chemical energy is also present in the food we eat. The molecules in food contain stored energy that is released when they are broken down during digestion. This energy is then used by our bodies to carry out various functions such as movement and growth.
Batteries are another common example of chemical energy. A battery is composed of two electrodes, each made of a different metal or material, immersed in an electrolyte solution. Chemical reactions between the electrodes and the electrolyte produce a flow of electrons, creating an electrical current that can be used to power devices such as flashlights or cellphones. The chemical energy stored in the battery is converted into electrical energy.
