What is the SAT Test?

The SAT test is a popular entrance exam for admissions to colleges and universities in the US. SAT scores are used by colleges to check applying students’ college readiness.

SAT is administered multiple times in a year and there is no limit to how many times a student can take it. Students can re-attempt the test till they are finally happy with the numbers and are ready to apply.

The test can be taken by both American and foreign students.

The SAT Format

The SAT Test has 3 main sections and an optional essay section.

The 3 sections are:

1. Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW)

  • The questions focus on research skills, comprehension, and interpretation of deeper contexts that ensure students’ readiness to survive in college.
  • It lays more emphasis on vocabulary that is not isolated but contextual. The questions also judge students’ word choice with an emphasis on underlying tones and meanings in it.

2. Essay (Optional)

  • It comes at the end of the English section. It depends on a college whether they require the SAT essay score for admission
  • Time: 50 minutes
  • The prompts analyze a student’s reading and writing skills as the write-up has to be produced after analyzing the source information provided in the question.

3. Math

  • Total of 58 multiple–choice questions of which 12-13 are student-produced response questions in the form of grid-ins.
  • 80 minutes for both the Calculator section and No Calculator section
  • Questions are based on high school math – Algebra I and II, Data Analysis, geometry, and some trigonometry
  • Several questions on the test may be based on a single scenario.
  • Questions will assess a student’s math concepts, ability to apply these concepts to the real world & proficiency in using math tools like the calculator.

SAT Test Scores – Overview

The total SAT score is a sum of the individual section scores.

The total SAT score ranges from 400-1600. Section-wise, the scores range between 200-800.

This score is obtained by converting the raw score which is the number of questions answered correctly. There is no penalty for wrong answers.

SAT Percentile Score

SAT score is also presented in the percentile format to give a broader perspective to both the students and the colleges.

A percentile score highlights the performance in relation to the peers.

It is used to compare individual scores to other SAT takers and a representative group of 11th and 12th-grade students.

The total scale of the score ranges from 400-1600 (without essay) and is calculated on the score reported in different sections.

  • Evidence-Based Reading & Writing:  200-800
  • Math:  200-800
  • Essay: 200-800 (if opted is recorded separately)
