Percentage – Definition

A Percentage is a number or ratio expressed as a fraction of 100.

We use the percent symbol (%) to express the percentage.

Finding The Percentage of A Number

• Multiply the number by the percent
• Divide the answer by 100 (Move the decimal point two places to the left)
• Round to the desired precision

Examples of Percentage

1. 90% = 90/100

= 9/10 (or) 0.9

2. 75% = 75/100

= 3/4 (or) 0.75

3. 62.5% = 62.5/100

= 5/8 (or) 0.625

4. 50% = 50/100

= 1/2 (or) 0.5

5. 30% = 30/100

=3/10 (or) 0.3

How do you get a percentage of an amount?

Let’s understand with a couple of examples:

1. Find 16% of $1600

Solution

16% of $1600

= 16/100 × 1600

= $256

Therefore, Answer: $256

2. What is 80% of 15?

Solution

The whole is 15.
The percentage is 80%.

Let n represent the part.

Write a proportion to solve for n.

100n = 80 x 15

100n = 1200

n=12

Therefore, Answer: 80% of 15 is 12.
