Understanding Division of Fractions:

1.

Dividing fractions by fractions means finding out how many times one fraction is contained in another.

Reciprocal Rule

2.

To divide fractions, multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal (flipped version) of the second fraction.

Example

3.

For instance, to solve 1/2 ÷ 1/3, multiply 1/2 by 3/1 (the reciprocal of 1/3). (1/2) ÷ (1/3) = (1/2) * (3/1) = 3/2.

Simplify the Result

4.

Always simplify the fraction result, if possible. In the above example, 3/2 can be simplified to 1 1/2 or 1.5.

Common Denominator

5.

If the fractions have different denominators, find a common denominator before dividing.
